Website Recommendation of the Day: bit.ly

bit.ly - a URL shortening website. If you want to share as a teacher websites for others to view you may give them the direct URL or in an easier fashion the shortened version. This website will help you do that.

visual.ly- this website will aid in your presentations and strengthen your arguments via visual data representation and has inspirational ideas for all. Isn't visual just better, smoother, easier? I have to give a shout out to our VP Mr. Murphy for first introducing me to the visual representations, which succinctly show what I am thinking. It reminds me a lot of the roundtable I attended with Mr. Mortis and Ms. Ramos at the last education conference describing how people may learn more quickly through graphic novels. Our question was, "Is retention higher through this method?" The answer is likely not longterm for some and if you ask others they'll say it is because they remember seeing the picture, which triggers the memory of the entire concept. State dependency?!

Website Recommendation of the Day: The {dot}ly sites (.ly)

What is with the .ly sites, like bit.ly, cel.ly, visual.ly? What does "ly" even stand for?

According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.ly):

A .ly registration is the process of registering top-level country-code domain name for Libya. The registration is sponsored by the General Post and Telecommunication Company. The .ly domain extension, introduced in 1988, is administrated by the registry LYNIC. This domain is mainly for the use of the general public of Libya.
The NIC.LY team appoints recognized registrars to offer .ly domain names, and these registrars perform all the domain registration tasks on behalf of the NIC.LY. Libya Telecom & Technology (ltt.ly) is one of the pioneers that offer .ly domain extension to companies and organizations. Sub domains are also allowed for .ly domain name at both the second level and third level beneath various second levels.
According to the registration site, "any .LY domain names may be registered, except domains containing obscene and indecent names/phrases, including words of a sexual nature; furthermore domain names may not contain words/phrases or abbreviations insulting religion or politics, or be related to gambling and lottery industry or be contrary to Libyan law or Islamic morality."
The GPTC registers domain names on a first come, first served basis. Applicants may apply for multiple domains with a registration fee of $75 for each domain. Before registration, the domain name, company name, trademark registration and other legal documents must be provided. In addition, the .ly domain names being registered should not violate any rules set forth by the registrar. Domain names may be registered for a minimum of two years.
The official website for .ly registration is http://www.nic.ly. Applicants may also register domains through official registrars list herehttp://www.ltt.ly/en/agents/l.php?service=2&city=1 After completing the registration process, an email will be sent to the applicant's billing contact address. The .ly domain name will become active within 12–24 hours of that email notification.
The second-level domains which are officially open to third-level registrations are:
  • .com.ly: Commercial services
  • .net.ly: Internet-related services
  • .gov.ly: Government and ministries
  • .plc.ly: State-owned companies
  • .edu.ly: Educational and training institutions
  • .sch.ly: Schools
  • .med.ly: Health-related services
  • .org.ly: Non-profit organizations
  • .id.ly: Individuals.

Website Recommendation of the Day: SMS TOOLS

Mr. Murphy and I did our first Roundtable presentation today and it was very successful. Believe it or not, none of our viewers were from the USA, instead they were from Canada, Nigeria and the Arab Emirates. They somehow found us in the program and were kind enough to join us as we discussed the mission of the school, how we believe students want to learn based on our collection of data from their responses to surveys. I hope one day all of our teachers will present their own ideas and grow, Grow, GROW! During the presentation I realized how fortunate we really are as teachers with what we have as teaching resources at our school. I hope also that these resources are used to their fullest in order for each student to get what they need from education, remain engaged and learn, as well so WE grow and become better teachers.

Here you will find links to the SMS programs we highlighted and our presentation (thanks Ms. Parker for finding a lot of these sites for us to explore!).

Website Recommendation of the Day: Realplayer

Real Player is a site which many people have used, but the most updated version allows you to not only play video and music but also download and record ANY  video from the web and convert it to the format best fitting. It can even strip away the video, leaving just the audio and then convert it to mp3. A great improvement and a necessary tool! With any video you watch it will ask you at the top right of the vid if you wish to download it. One thing to note, the video does not have to be playing, but may be playing during download.

Download for free today!
